my friend and I like the same guy

My friend and I don't usually discuss who we like, and I always try to hide it, just cause I'm pretty shy. A lot of guys obsess over her, and guys like me too, but they don't obsess. We both have some guy friends who weren't more than friends, and I'm almost positive that she likes one of them. Unfortunately, I happen to like him too. I don't want to compete with her over a guy, but I wasn't sure that I wanted to just stand back, either. Well he talked to me and asked if he could trust me, and then told me that he liked her. I asumed that that was the time to back off no matter what, so I did. But is there anything I can do different in the future, that might make things better? My friend and I often like the same guys.

The answer is to share the pool of guys.
You both seem to be attractive and guys like you. You should take the ones that like you and she takes the ones that like her.
There's not a whole lot more you can do except talk with your friend and decide who likes who more.
