if she took him back - he would consider leaving me

Visitor's Question from a 51-60 year old Female
I have been going out with this great guy for a year now. He has a past history with another woman (18 years) whom he would like to maintain a friendship with now. She left him (3 years). He has declared his love for me over and over again, but wants to also talk and see the other woman as friends. Can you be friends with someone you have been intimate with for so long? He still has thoughts of her and has grieved the breakup and told me not to long ago that if she took him back - he would consider leaving me. Since then he has reassured me its me he wants, but won't let go of the friendship with her, even if the ultimatium is me or her. He said he would lie to keep me but know in his heart he would still want contact with her. Thats the kind of guy he is - never burn bridges. He keeps saying "its only friends - like any of his other friends". Do I believe him? He has never lied or cheated on me or her when he was with her.
