How can I win him over enough for him to see me instead of her?

I met this guy through an Ex,my Ex isn't the problem really when it comes to us seeing each other. The problem is his Ex. He told me that him and his Ex aren't going in the same direction and can't keep seeing each other. I figured that left the field open for me, but I was wrong. Cause I know he's still seeing the Ex. I'm not sure what to do really. I figure if he keeps seeing her, even as a friend, then he'll never get over her. It's like he's waiting in hopes that she'll change her mind about him.
How can I win him over enough for him to see me instead of her?

Have a long, honest, caring and trusting conversation with him and ask him what the story is with his ex. Ask him if he wants to get back together with her and if so, where does that leave you.
Meanwhile, be a good friend and companion for him to show him how nice it would be for him to be with you.
