My ex was jealous of his bestfriend having another really close guy friend.

Original Visitor's Question from a 31-40 year old Female
I dated this guy for almost 1 year. It was a long distance relationship. My boyfriend at the time had a bestfriend (male) who lives near me. While we were dating his friendship with the bestfriend was on rocky ground, they then ended their friendship (badly) and haven't spoken since. My ex was jealous of his bestfriend having another really close guy friend. I was upset because he had me and I thought that we were bestfriends. He said it wasn't the same, a few weeks later he said he needed "space". We broke up. It's now a year later and we remained distant friends but my ex has since found out that I have been spending a lot of time with his ex-bestfriend and we are taking it slow but like each other. He doesn't really like the idea that I am still friends with the ex, not out of jealously but because he doesn't think highly of him. It seems like my ex boyfriend is trying to contact me as much as possible, which is okay with me i suppose. It kind of feels as though he has been flirting, he has started calling me endearing names etc. I don't mind being his friend, I feel sorry for the guy. But, I can't help but wonder if it has nothing to do with me. I keep thinking the only reason why he is contacting me so much and being so friendly is because I am a link to the friend he lost. I'm not exactly sure what my question is, I just wanted an outside opinion.
