Is he shy, or is he just playing me?

Original Visitor's Question from a 13-20 year old Female
Ok, so I like this guy in my class. I've known him since a few years ago, but it's the first time he's actually in my class and that I talk to him.
He was in my friend's class for the two last years, and she always told me how funny and outgoing he was. Although, when I'm around him, he's usually quiet and serious.
In art class, where we can talk to everybody and wander around, he's really funny, and he makes me laugh. He sometimes pokes my arm when he's talking to me, and he keeps telling me how cool every project I make is, and how talented I am.
Though, when I'm in my regular class,he just looks at me sometimes from the corner of the eye, but he doesn't talk to me. Recently, he even started talking to two or three girls and I can see him glancing at me while he does that, but that could just be because I'm near by.
But he over all just acts weird. He's sometimes shy, sometimes more outgoing. He on and off like that all the time. It's just odd.
With all that, do I have a chance, or should I let go?
Thanks!!
