She has committment issues

Visitor's Question:
My girlfriend of six months and I broke up last week. She told me in the beginning that she had never had a relationship longer than 7 months, and that she had never told any guy that she loved them. I thought it was odd back then, but things were going so well, that our relationship kept going. That is, until Sunday. I had a few too many drinks before and dropped the "where are we headed with this" question, because we both work on an island and will be leaving at some point for other places. Basically, I wanted to know where/if she saw a future for us. Unfortunately she told me that she couldn't see us ever getting married, etc. In the same breath, she said that I was perfect, etc., but that she wasn't ready to settle down. I found it odd, because it's not like I asked her to marry, just wanted to see if we were even moving in the same direction. Everything else was great in the relationship. No fights. No cheating. We are very similar.

Is this a case of her being a commitment-phobe, me smothering her, or is this all just an excuse because she has lost interest? Are relationships like these worth fighting for?

Our Suggestion:
Yes, she does seem commitment phobic.

Your question was not smothering or demanding just curious.

She responded with a knee-jerk canned speech about not being ready.

I don't think she has lost interest in you, but I also don't thing she is a good long-term prospect. You will probably go your separate ways when on of you leaves the island.

Good luck! George
