Communication Issue

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
I have this wonderful woman I've been dating for 3 months now. We get like each other a lot and get along very well. The problem is that she wants more than simple answers from me. "I would like you to give me detailed information", she says. I would like to do that but do not know how. I would hate to lose her on account of this and she feels the same way. What can I do?

Our Suggestion:
Sometimes men and women communicate differently.

Women sometimes communicate like ballet artists... the interweave their conversations and don't have rigid rules about whose turn it is to talk.

Some men, however, converse like cannon fire. One booms out a few sentences and both wait a few seconds as the shot reverberates and it is quiet. Then the other guy booms back his reply. They take turns talking.

When these styles of talking meet it often doesn't go smoothly. The guy booms out a word or two and the woman jumps right in and starts talking before the guy has finished speaking.

That may have nothing to do with your problem, but consider the possibility that she isn't giving you enough time to finish your thought.

Here is a way to increase your conversation. If she brings up a subject or asks a question, give your brief answer but then think about "who, what, when, where, and why." Tell her you are going to try to use this approach to help you fill out your answers. It will be a strain at first but once you get the hang of it your conversation skills should improve.

Good luck! George
