What should I do?

Visitor's Question:
I've been working at a drive-thru for about 10 months now. Almost every week to every other week I've noticed this guy. He didn't say much beyond what he wanted, and I didn't say much beyond a greeting and the price. There was never so much as a hint of a smile. I thought he was cute from almost the first when I really started to pay attention. The word intense came to my mind every time I looked into his eyes. Once I tried to get witty and say what he wanted before he asked, he didn't hear me. Needless to say I was embarrassed, so I never said anything again. I went on knowing what he wanted before he asked for it. I noticed that he had a new truck. I suffer from anxiety to the point where I need medication. About a month ago I fought up the nerve to speak to him, because I noticed something different on his truck. I blushed afterwards a first for me and let’s just say it's not an easy thing for a person of my skin tone to do. He smiled and talked to me. The next time he came up we both smiled and I made hand movements like an idiot talking about what he wanted. Every time since then when I open the window and look up at him, we smile at each other. I don’t know if I’m making more out of it like I always do. I feel that he’s as shy as I am. I really want to talk to him or flirt with him in a way that lets him know that I’m interested and our different races and backgrounds don’t matter to me. I’m not sure how to let him see that I’m not the stereotype. But I don’t want to throw myself out there completely. I need to know how to be subtle in my advances. What should I do? Should I look for certain signs that might indicate some feelings on his part? Should I say or act a certain way?

Our Suggestion:
You are doing well.

Building up slowly is good. You probably don't have a lot of time to talk to him at the window but try some of the following as you get a chance.

Introduce yourself... say my name is --- what's your name?
If he looks of school age ask him where he goes to school.
When he drives up say "Do you want the regular?" And if he remarks on how you remember tell him you always remember your favorite customer' orders.

Aftere chatting him up some more, one day tell him if he wants to come inside you'll buy him his meal and you can talk a while. If he says no the first time, don't give up.

Sorry you are so anxious and shy... but you are clearly intelligent just from you wrote your question. Smart people are often shy.

Good luck! George
