I was dumped because my boyfriend is depressed

Visitor's Question:
I'm pretty sure my boyfriend is suffering from depression and he broke up with me even though he told me he still cares for me. I know I have my problems, but he wasn't perfect either. I was fine with that and we were together for over 2 1/2 years without incident until this summer. After a loss of a good friend, he was going down hill, coming home high and doing less and less things with me. Then he dropped the bombshell on me. My therapist told me to stop talking to him, but I get so lonely and miss him so much, so I still talk to him. Sometimes he gets so emo especially if I slip and get mad at him. He starts tells me all his problems. He feels like his friends are gone, and he's gaining weight. He says things like he has nobody and everybody left him. I want to be there for him yet he dumped me and it hurts that he doesn't recognize that I want to be there for him. If I ever talk about doing something in the future after I've totally moved on, he's always has indecisive or morose replies. I don't want to leave him alone in risk of really pushing further into depression. But I know talking to him isn't good for me either. I really don't want to stop talking to him. I want to think that if he does get better, we could try again. I want him back so much, but I do genuinely worry about him.

How can I make him see that I really do want him to get better? How can I help him help himself? Should I keep going, hold out for him and keep hoping we can get back together or am I just fooling myself?

Our Suggestion:
This website is not generally for problems as serious as your.

My advice would normally be see a therapist. So, since you already have a therapist take whatever advice you are getting.

Good luck! George
