Visitor's Question:
I have a problem. I am an eighth grader at a 7-12 private school. I seem to have a thing for the guys in the sophomore class. Right now I like this one boy, and I think that I like him more than I’ve ever liked someone. The problem is, I don’t exactly know him personally. I know who he is, and he knows who I am (because we have talked through a friend) but that’s pretty much it. I don’t know why I like him so much. He’s really cute and I hear from everyone that he’s a really nice guy (which he is, because I have spoken to him once online). I have his screen name, but I can never get myself to Instant Message him when he is online (because he doesn’t know that I kept it from when we spoke last). My friend keeps telling me to just go for it and talk to him, but I just can’t. Whenever I think about him, I get dizzy and nauseous and happy and giggly and I hate constantly feeling like that, especially because I cannot bring myself to do anything about it. I always tell myself that I’m going to talk to him (online first, not in person yet), but I always chicken out. I’ve chickened out when I tried to talk to all the other guys I’ve liked, too. I don’t know why I can’t do it. I just get extremely nervous and I never know what to do or say. I get afraid that he’s going to think I’m just some weird kid and I don’t want to get rejected. I’m trying to get myself to talk to him so we can become friends first, but I’m not sure what to do. I need help, because I hate my emotions taking over while I can’t do anything about them. Can you help me think of something to say to him and just help me with my problem in general?

Our Suggestion:
Ask what his favorite sport is and then ask him what the rules are and how do you score. Or, ask about his family... does he have siblings, pets, favorite grandmother or grandfather, family vacations. Then tell him about your family.

Everyone is emotionally when they talk with someone they like especially. That's just life. It takes practice and if you don't start now you will have a harder time learning the older you get. So take a deep breath and jump in the pool. You'll find it is more fun than you ever expected.

Good luck! George
