We Hide Our Emotions Around Others

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
My girlfriend and I have been dating for about a month now. But we are really conscious of what others say, so we tend to keep our emotions for each other hidden away, to an extent, when we are around friends. Is this good or bad? And if its bad, what should I do?

Our Suggestion:
Well, there's two ways of looking at this. First, your emotions for each other are a private thing between you two. You wouldn't want tons of people watching you and examining you while you kissed! So for you to keep your personal life private is pretty normal. It is something special that just you two share.

On the other hand, you should do things because YOU TWO want to do them, NEVER because you're worried about "how it will look to others". If your friends are going to judge you based on how you act, they aren't very good friends. If someone who is judging you isn't even a friend, who cares what they say!! One of THE most important things you learn in life is that you need to make YOU happy. You can't do things to try to impress others. It does not matter what others say or thing. It matters what you and your girlfriend feel and think. So if the only reason you are holding back is "others might talk" then it might be a good thing to start doing things deliberately even THOUGH they might talk. You need to learn to stand up for yourself and do what you want to do - and not worry about gossip.
