Finding Time for Ourselves

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
My girlfriends mom owns a business and my girlfriend has to help out there alot, but how can I talk to her mom so we can spend some time alone together. So far we have only had two nights alone without her mom. We feel trapped, so what can I do so we can have a nice, quiet, romantic night alone?

Our Suggestion:
It's great to own a business, but it is also a lot of work. Your girlfriend's mom is enlisting your girlfriend to help out which is great. But every work situation should involve regular breaks. If you burn yourself out, then there IS no more business. If your mom burns out your girlfriend so that she hates the business, then what will your mom do in the future?

YOU should not be talking to the mom about this. It is your GIRLFRIEND who needs to take the stand here. It is her life that is being dictated. Your girlfriend shouldn't let anyone push her around - whether it is you or her mom! She needs to learn how to stand up for herself and say what is best for her.

Your girlfriend needs to talk to her mom and be fair but firm. She already puts a good portion of her time to the business but she cannot put ALL of it. That isn't healthy for anyone, no matter what their age. All of life needs balance.

So she should at least get 1 day a week off for her own break. If your mom can't handle it herself, she should hire someone else. If she can't afford to hire someone, then she should close the shop. But to burn out her daughter is not a healthy choice. Shopkeepers around the world deal with these issues and they find solutions. A solution is not to burn out your employees. If the mom hasn't learned that yet, it's time she did learn it.
