Moving In Together

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
This is a strange question, but, me and my girlfriend have been talking about our future. Soon we want to move in together. Is it a good idea to move in with a girlfriend?

Our Suggestion:
I'm not sure what the comparison is here :). Are your choices to move in together or to always live separately, in separate houses and never to be together? Or are you saying you don't want to move in together until you think you're ready to get married, and then combine the stresses of marrying with the stresses of living together all in one fell swoop?

I always look at living together as a great way to test out if you were really compatible in the same place. I know many, many people who *thought* they were great together up until they lived in the same place. Once they had to share a house they realized just how poorly matched they really were and luckily were able to save their friendship by moving back out again. I also know people who did the live together part for a while, proved to themselves that they were a great match and then happily married.

So it is always up to you both whether or not you're ready to take that next step. Make sure that you both are fully ready for it. Changes in your relationship should always be agreed to by both people, and not be where one person is pressuring the other person into giving in.
