Becoming Boyfriend of a Friend

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
Ok, I am sort of friends with this one chick and I see her every week and I think I can relate to a lot of things with her when I talk to her. Like stuff she’s been through and stuff she’s going through. I think she may like me more than a friend, but I was told by my sister (who also knows her) she doesn’t want a b/f.

I almost hooked up with her like a year ago, but didn't and she changed now (for the good). I remember not too long ago she bought me and my friend pop and we talked and hung out. I also was talking to her a lot one day and asked if I could call her but she said I'm never home and really busy, but said she could probably call me but I didn't have a chance to give her my number? Recently she been acting sort of shy and quiet around me. There is also this other guy that I think is trying to hook up with her but she said he really isn’t that funny, so I assume she likes someone else more?

I think she really wants a b/f but she is trying to protect herself which I respect. I guess I don't know how to approach her. I mean I want to be good friends with her and still maybe something more. Your advice has helped in the past and I appreciate it.

Our Suggestion:
It's really very common for friends to become very fond of each other - after all, they are friends in the first place! They have a lot in common and spend time with each other. The trick is not to go rushing into things and spooking each other. You take it slowly.

I have lots of advice on it here -

built it up over time. Hug hello and goodbye. Go to movies. All those things that friends do. But build up the level of contact until you are pretty much dating already. Then suddenly you realize that you are a good pair, without having to worry about "what the change will do to us".
