Our Suggestion:
I'll assume this individual is male just so I don't have to say he/she everywhere. Yes, a guy must be able to be happy on his own in order to be a person that can make someone else happy. Otherwise he turns into a leech, needing her to be there to "entertain him" and keep him happy. What happens when she has to go do other things, or wants to spend time with friends? Does he mope in a corner until she returns because he's incapable of being happy on his own? That's hardly healthy.

He should like to be with her, but he should also have things he does without her - maybe friends to play darts with, or books to read, or a model train set to work on. We all need hobbies and interests to keep our minds active and engaged. And then he can tell her all about the things he did while she was gone, and she can tell him about the things she did, and it keeps the conversation going. Heck, then he can teach her about his hobbies, she can teach him about hers and both of their worlds can grow.
