My girlfriend's on a break

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
My girlfriend and I have been on a "break", initiated by her, for a month now. She still calls and we were together for a year. What can I do to get her back?

Our Suggestion:
I've had other people write in asking about breaks, so you might want to read through the answers I gave them. In essence a break is a sign that something is not right in the relationship. People in a happy, healthy relationship don't take breaks from each other, they are happy with the love and support they receive. So something was wrong enough in the relationship that she felt she needed time away from you to think, instead of what normally happens which is you talk through the issue with your partner.

So find a quiet time when you're both full of good food and maybe are sipping glasses of wine, and ask her how she really feels. Promise to listen and not to comment, and that you really want to know. *Something* pushed her over a line to ask for that break. Ask about it and find out what it is. It's only be addressing that issue that you can heal the rift and get back together.
