Talk with your ex

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
My ex and I were together for almost four years. During that fours years we were happy with each other, he was deeply in love with me, he wanted to marry me when I finished college. The probelm was my family because I wasn't taking care of my school priorities and they figured he was in the way also they had issues with him beign white(I am an african american female). But, he was awesome and continued to stick by me still adoring me wanting to take care of me the rest of my life. I just couldn't stand up to my parents and tell them that I loved him and wanted to marry him after college. So about the last year of our realtionship, I kept breaking up with him and getting back with him. Everytime would break his heart, but I really loved him, just was confused because of pressure from my parents. This last time I broke up he said it was it because I wouldn't be honest with my parents about what the both of us wanted and he didn't want to keep going on the same way not knowing for sure what I wanted or if things would get better. During our previous breakup I had kissed my ex and I told him about it this last time. Anyway, we had been talking about getting back together for about a month or so and I finally got the courage to open up with my parents. But now he is casually seeing someone else. I love him so much, I want to marry him, is it possible he could have just given up on our love or just hurt by everything, though now he knows that I finally opened up to my parents? He told me I was it for him while we were together. How do I get him back?

Our Suggestion:
Have an open honest discussion with him about where the two of you stand. You didn't mention whether your parents are ok with the marriage, but I will assume they are ok with it. He needs to tell you how he feels now that your parents know. I am sure he would enjoy meeting and having this discussion.

Good luck,
George
