Visitor's Question:
Hey, i'm 18 years old and my girlfriend is 16 and we are going to try and stay together to get married in a few years but we've been fighting a little more than we ever have lately and its been like her missing little things like time to hang, or her choosing her friends over me , and me losing my temper and flipping out , i really want to know how to keep my cool and how to tell her to go the right way. and if i can ask ,when is a good time to ask her to marry me i mean i can't lose this girl she is everything to me, thanks for your help

Our Suggestion:
True love will find a way. I think part of the discord in your relationship is due to the age difference. She is 16, still in a high school frame of mind. You are older and ready to think of settling down and being life-long partners.

She really needs the same space you had when you were 16 to do what you want to do, hang out with friends, etc. Considering marriage at her age is premature and will make her feel fenced in. You ought to drop discussions of marriage until she is 18 or a high school grad.

The way to defuse your anger is not easy, because you love her so much you want to be with her most of the time. But that same love should help you recognize that she needs to be herself... a sixteen year old girl. The next time you get angry, stop and ask yourself if you truly love her. Your heart should tell you to allow her to be herself even if it means some self-sacrifice on your part.

None of this is easy, but who said true love always runs smooth?

Best of luck,
George
