Promise ring

Visitor's Question:
Hello,
This may or may not be a question you hear a lot but hear it goes. I've been with my girlfriend for 2 1/2 years now. We are 19 and 18 and have been through a hell of a lot together and love eachother very deeply. Recently I've been thinking of buying her a promise ring for Christmas. 2 weeks ago she made a comment about how she wanted a promise ring, and I thought great, this will be an awesome next step for us. But today we were talking on the phone and she was jokingly naming everything she wanted me to buy her for Christmas and I said (also joking) well how about some cheap jewelry instead. Then she said she hated jewlery and didn't want any and I couldn't tell if she was kidding or not. Now I don't know if it's because she doesn't want me to waste one of her Christmas presents on jewlery or what, because she has her heart set on some other things. But I bought her a pendant 2years ago and she loved it. Anyway, I love this girl and I have my heart set on getting her one this year, but I don't want to ruin the significance of the moment if she wasn't really looking forward to jewelry. I mean I know she won't be dissapointed If I get a her a ring but I want the occassion to be special. And I'm still getting her other stuff in addition to the ring. I'm confused because a couple weeks ago she said she wanted a ring but now she doesn't want any jewlery. Do you think she could of meant like necklace or earring jewlery?
I appreciate your help in advance.

Our Suggestion:
The only way to be sure how she feels is to tell her you plan to buy her a promise ring. It spoils the surprise but also clarifies how she feels.

Good luck,
George
