Doctor's have heard every embarrassing question over and over so she needs to be brave and ask his advice. Ask for a female doctor if necessary. The hymen is the thin membrane that keeps you from being able to enter her. You should be able to feel it with you finger at the front of the vagina. Another possibility is vaginismus which is the contraction of vaginal muscles which then prevent penetration and/or painful intercourse.
