while I love her with all my heart, I lie to her about stupid things

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
I am having problems with trust in my marriage. My wife and I have been married for 6 months, and while I love her with all my heart, I lie to her about stupid things. I have been able to be truthful on large things like money matters, but the trust has been shattered. I am now faced the problem of getting the trust back – I know it’s not an overnight solution, but I could do with some advice. Please help.

Our Suggestion:
Let's assume that this is not a problem that blossomed overnight.

I imagine this is part of your personality that has developed over years. You are going to have a hell of a time getting rid of it if that is true. The best way to kill this habit is to think before everything you say and ask yourself if it is true. Tell your wife you are going to do this because it will slow up the conversation. If she wants to help you she can ask you after each of your statements "Is that true?" The trick will be for you to let her do it and be thankful she is willing to do it.

The above might work, but my real advice is for you or you two to see a counselor and see if you can work your way to the bottom of the problem.

Good luck!
George
