I work with her and see her everyday, I don't want to wind up with egg on my face

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
There is a girl at my work, for some reason I have suddenly become drawn to. She is also about 12 years younger than me (I'm 34). I think on a few ocasions I've caught her looking at me and I know she has caught me looking at her at least twice ( I quickly turned away). Outside of a few business issues, we haven't really talked. But when we have, it's been pleasant. I am a very shy person and I think she is too. The other day I passed by her in the hall. It took a lot of strength to do this, but I gave her a little smile. She did smile back but quickly looked down.

I have never gone after anyone I work with. It's always been a rule I stongly upheld. Also, I havn't ever gone out with anyone less than 3 years younger than me. But as I said, for some reason I feel drawn to her suddenly. She has been there for 3 years and then just over the last 3 weeks I feel something there.

Now considering I work with her and have to see her everyday, I don't want to wind up with egg on my face. I only want my interest in her to be known only if the interest is mutual. If she has no interest in me, I'm willing to just let it go rather than get embarrassed. Now I know there are no guarentees in situations like these, but is there anything I can do to find out if she does have an interest in me? Is there any way to tell? If there is a good oppertunity for something here I don't want to let it get by me. Also is there anything wrong with the age difference?

Our Suggestion:
First off, you should give this another three weeks before you take any steps that might leave egg on your face. The three weeks will give you time to think over what you are doing, how to do it, and to be sure your feelings stay the same.

If you feel the same, develop some rapport with her by greeting her with a clear "Hi" plus her name, and give her a big smile. Do this every time you see her.

This process should help you determine if she has any interest in you.

I see no problem with the age difference.

Good luck! George
