I Like my Fellow Trainee

Visitor's Question:
I am a trainee teacher and that means that I have to undergo teaching practice before I get confirmed as a full time teacher. And there’s this trainee teacher in my school who I sort of click with quite well. Let’s call him, Edmund. So Edmund and I have been talking lots and eating together at the canteen in school and recently, in one of my classes, a kid asked me if I’m in love with Edmund and that surprised me because the kids seem to notice that we hang out a lot together (just in school though). The problem now is, I never thought that I like Edmund till the kids highlighted our always being together.

And when I think about it at night, I think I do like him very much and would like to know him better. But how? I’m feeling kind of awkward with him around now that I know that I like him. And how would I know if he feels the same or not?

Our teaching practice is ending in 11 days and after which, we would most likely to be posted to different schools. Sigh… then the chances of meeting and all would lessen…

What should I do?

Our Suggestion:
It's really common for others to give you a nudge to realize you like someone more than just friends. Movies use this scenario a lot! You go along with someone being a great friend, and it's only when a third party starts to make you really *think* about the relationship that you realize that maybe you want to be more than friends.

The best relationships all begin as great friendships. So don't think of this as being "different". You guys were already friends. You want to become BETTER friends. So keep talking to him! Of course you like him, friends like each other. Make sure you get his email and phone and such, just like good friends would. Stay in touch with him and offer to grab dinner after class. Or find out what his favorite movie would be and suggest you go as friends. Ease into it. As you spend time together, it'll become sort of obvious if he's interested in the more snuggly aspect of "good friendship" :)
