If you haven't seen each other for a number of weeks, and didn't know each other too well before that, then I'd say that when you meet up again it will be almost the same as beginning a completely new relationship.
Be careful. Don't be too trusting too soon. As you said, letting a man you don't know well stay overnight can be risky.
He may just feel that he doesn't really know you well enough to be sure of anything and so, as Sal says, he may be leading you on a bit.
