Why do people want a girlfriend or boyfriend so much?

Hi again.
As i said before, i want a girlfriend yeah, but i am kinda scard in going up to a girl of my choice.I asked would it matter if i wasnt able to get a girlfriend, and i would be alone for the rest of my whole life. I dont want to, but i know its a possibilty of me being alone.
I'll give you a situtation ive been through, i showed my friend, this girl at college, he said i cant get a girl like that, and then he laughed.
I dont like when people comment and say silly things to me at college about my appearance, i mean what on earth is there mental problems. Thats why i am scard in going up to a girl.
One more question. Why do people want a girlfriend or boyfriend so much?.
Anyway sorry to be a pain in the neck.
