My boyfriend wants to take a break

Visitor's Question:
My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 1/2 years. We've had our ups and downs, but we've always managed to work through them. This past month, my attitude towards him and his friends hasn't been the greatest. It's not that I have any hate towards them, but I do have a problem controlling my smart-elic comments. And I've had this problem since I was little. This has been an issue for us since the beginning and I'm honestly trying to watch what I say but occasionally I slip. So after my last slip-up, he didn't speak to me for a week, so I then decided to meet him at his work so we could talk about it. He said he was extremely angry for how selfish my attitude was and that he's tired of dealing with it and he wanted to take a break. We didn't speak for 3 more days but then we met up and went to a park to talk. I told him that I would be dedicated to changing my attitude and that I would even quit smoking. I have always been open, honest, loving, caring, loyal and trustworthy to him. Why does he want to give that up? He said he isn't going to make any irrational decisions and he's definately going to think long and hard about continuing our relationship. I asked him if he was still in love with me and he said yes, but why is he questioning whether or not he wants to be with me? I love him with all my heart and I know we can work through this but I don't know what I can do to convince him of that. I know with all my heart that he's the only one for me. I just don't understand how he can throw almost 5 years of love away?! I don't know what to do. Please help!

Our Suggestion:
He says he still loves you.

So the break is probably meant to be a signal to you to stop certain behavior. You said you know what the behavior is... your smart-aleckness. It is going to be hard to change a life-long habit, but that's what you need to try.

You might seek out a professional counselor to help you with this.

Good luck! George
