Like you said, if you just ask her to be your g/f that could scare her off. Start off slow. Whenever you pass her, look her straight in the eyes, say in a strong voice, "Hi" plus her name and give her a big smile. She should be like most people and feel good when someone says hi to them. After doing this for a week or so, ask her how she is doing and if possible get a conversation going. Ask for some way to contact her like phone, internet. Once you start contacting each other on a regular basis you can judge when it's time to tell her that you are "developing feelings" for her. Good luck!
