Taking a Break

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
My girlfriend and I are "taking a break". She said from the beginning that it would only be temporary. We've been on it for about 2 weeks. She was calling me everyday, and telling me she missed me and loved me. Then about a week ago, I got drunk and called her and left messages on her machine. I've never done that before, but I was just angry at the situation, and I guess I accused her of one thing or another. I apologized profusely, and Ive trusted her through a lot. But now she won't tell me she loves me or misses me, but tells my friends that she loves me and wants to be with me, but needs some space right now. Whats going on here?

Our Suggestion:
Well, the big question is what caused her to want the break. People don't just spontaneously think "I want to be alone" if they're in a relationship. Something causes them to feel that things aren't right and that they need time away from the situation to think about it. Maybe your call only strenghtened whatever feeling it was that she had.

Only SHE knows what is going on since she's the one that asked for the break. So talk to her about it! One of the cornerstones of any relationship is communication. Only you and she know what is going on between you two, and the only way you can get that information between you two is to share it. Again, if you can't talk about these issues now, how can you talk about more serious issues that may come up in the future? Sit down with her and talk openly about exactly what she is feeling, and what pushed her into this break. What does she hope to gain through this time? What answer is she seeking?
