We Worked on our Problems - I Want him Back

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
Hi, my ex and I were dating for about 3 months. It was going really great. Then he decided to break up with me. He said that he still loved me but he had a lot of things he needed to deal with and he didnt think he would be a great boyfriend. We still are friends and talk often.

Its been 4 months since we broke up and he said he has most of the problems dealt with now. I was wondering if you can give me some advice on how to talk with him about getting back together. Thanks...

Our Suggestion:
Well first off, you need to be honest here. If you can't be honest about your relationship, it won't work. Obviously things were NOT perfect between you two. If they were, he would have stayed with you while working through the problems. That's what people in relationships do, they support each other in times of trouble. They don't run off and abandon each other.

I would sit down with him and have a long talk about what he's been through and what you are interested in. Dating isn't a cosmic situation. It's simply two people supporting and loving each other. It doesn't even require a time commitment! Lots of people date who are far away and can spend literally zero hours a month "together". So the real question is, is he prepared to be monogamous to you, or is he not? If not, why? Is it because he wants to keep his options open for other women, or because he has one already?
