Ring problem

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
My "fiance" and I have been together for over four years. This summer he went to college and after we talked about what we wanted in our futures he proposed. He gave me a ring, and since we were going to be at separate schools for a few years I got him a ring as well. He's now at school, but he won't tell anyone we're engaged. When I visit him I'm introduced as his girlfriend and when anyone asks about his ring he says its a promise ring. I don't know what to do, I know in my heart its not right, but I don't know what to do.

Our Suggestion:
You need to confirm with your fiance that he indeed still continue to consider you his fiancee. If he answers yes, then request that he treat you as such. If he introduces you as his girlfriend say "ER, fiancee" and flash your ring and laugh.

Explain to him that it hurts you when he slights your status and it makes you wonder what is in his mind. Perhaps you will find out what he really thinks if you offer to return the ring. Don't do it unless you can stand the pain of his taking the ring back.

Good luck!
George
