Visitor's Question:
This is a bit of an odd situation, but I've been living with my girlfriend for almost a year now. The problem is, we didn't originally live together on account of taking the next step, but I sort of moved in because I didn't really have a place to live. It was supposed to be temporary and it's been a year now. We had said that I was definitely going to have a chance to find a roommate at a certain time, but as time went on, she liked having me here and it was a nice convenience to split a room with someone you're together with.

Well, after all this time we have DEFINITELY gone through some crazy times. We still love each other very much, but we're really not ready to live together. I mean, we had only been going out for like 3 months before this happened, and it was only supposed to happen for a couple of months. But recently there was a problem where her sister needed somewhere to live and she was going to replace me, but she's not anymore and we're going through with the move out anyway. I don't know if this is possible, but it seems that a lot of our intimacy has been lost since we've lived together.

Anyhow, what I'm asking is that is it actually possible to take this step back and still have a successful relationship? Part of me feels like that this step back is irreversible and thus may end our relationship. What do you think?

Our Suggestion:
You seem to have mixed feelings.

You say: We still love each other very much, but we're really not ready to live together." This says you are not ready to live together.

But then you say that it seems like a step backwards.

I guess what you are saying makes sense, and I tend to agree more strongly with the second part. It does seem like a step backwards from which you might not be able to recover.

My advice is that if you want this relationship to last you should not move out.

Good luck!
George
