Type A v. Type B

Visitor's Question:
My boyfriend and I dated for almost 1 1/2 years. We were happy, or so I thought. We occasionally fought over stupid stuff. One serious fight we had he told me I felt like his mom. I didn't quite understand that. Well he told everyone everything was fine and then suddenly broke up with me and told me he had been unhappy for months. He said he wants space, he isn't ruling anything out for the future, but he wants space. He told me he doesn't care if I see other people, but told his best friend he is afraid I will meet someone else. I love him more than I have anyone before. We talked about moving out, etc. I am a stressor, I stressed about everything, when we would move out together (we both live at home, and live 35 minutes away from each other). We were together 5 days a week usually, but most of the time it was half days b/c one of us had to work the same day. We are still friends, and right now we still have things of each others (keys, etc) that we have to give back, but have not been able to meet up yet. I don't know how to handle things. I am trying to learn and stress less about the future and enjoy the moment. I am a classic Type A, while he is a classic Type B.

Our Suggestion:
Type A's and Type B's have to compromise to work out together.

It's good that you are learning not to stress so much.

Perhaps if your ex picks up on your new attitude he will come back. But, you are going to have to work really hard to change your way... especially since there are many positive things about a Type A person. You don't want to lose those traits as you change yourself.

Discuss this with your ex and see what he says. Invite him over for his favorite home-cooked meal or give him a box of chocolate chip cookies. Many males are tempted by good food.

Good luck! George
