my ex still says i love you

So, my ex and I have been broken up for nine months. But, we are still friends. The problem i have is that he called me up on my birthday and said " i love you." What am I supposed to take from that?

Talk with him and find out what he meant.

It could have been a random "I love you" or it could have been a sincere declaration of his strong feelings. Talking this out with him is a good thing to do.
