Why does my Ex-Boyfriend call me so often?

Hi,

I broke up with my boyfriend (of a year) a couple of months ago. We agreed to stay friends and have an amicable friendship (even though I find him a bit hard to deal with at times). He has started seeing someone else awhile ago. And I have recently started seeing someone else also. Yet, he doesn't seem to let more than 2 days go by without calling or text messaging me. And often says that we should spend more time together. This is very confusing for me, especially since he is the one who wanted to break up in the first place. I'm finding it difficult to let go of my feelings for him because of this lack of 'headspace'. I've tried to not return his calls but he knows how to get a response out of me. What could possibly be motivating his behaviour?
