If he has a girlfriend, what should I do?

A few nights ago a boy that I had a crush on (who rumoredly had a crush on me) came over to my house and watched a movie. During the movie we cuddled and held hands. I was excited because I wanted something like that to happen. So here's the problem. He had a girlfriend for a while and now I'm not sure if they're still together. My gut tells me they're not together because I haven't seen them together at school for a few days, but I could be wrong. Now I feel like we are almost dating because of what happened during the movie. Should I ask him about his girlfriend? I don't want to offend him by asking if he's broken up with her, though. But I also don't want to start a relationship with someone who's already taken. Thanks for the advice!
