what should i do?

there's a boy at my school that i was really close friends with about two years ago. we talked 24/7 at school, did projects together, etc. since we were always together, everyone thought that we liked each other or were dating but i never liked him as more than a really good friend and i don't think he did either. the next year i had started liking him and we had barely ever talked or seen each other. now this year i like him even more, and i try to make eye contact with him every time i see him. we have too, many times daily. i have talked to him very little, only like twice. i really really want to get to get close to him again but i don't even know if he's single or not. what should i do?
