Ask about Family
It's always polite to ask after family members to see how they are doing. And doing this with your ex helps to subtly remind them that you were a part of their life and that you still share that tie and knowledge. It helps to keep the mindset one of "close intimate circle" and not let you drift to that "casual friend" status.
