Stay On Target
This is key! Donīt drag in unrelated (or even semi-related) things. You want the argument to resolve something. Find a way to get it resolved. Dragging in other items might just make it harder to even remember *what* you were resolving in the first place and very little will be resolved.
Remember, an argument is about two people finding a compromise on an issue. If this item is really an indicator of a larger problem, then agree to table the current item and set a time to sit down and work through the bigger problem. If the issue is that he hasn't taken out the trash, but the larger issue is that he hasn't done the trash in 3 weeks, then agree this is a part of a bigger problem. And then agree to sit down when you're both prepared, to discuss how to rearrange chore duties so you both feel happy with the results.
