Visitor's Question: My boyfriend(19) and I(18)(both virgins) have been dating for 8 months and we think that we are ready to have sex. He and I, and My parents and I are open about the subject and we have talked about safety issues like condoms and even the consequences if that were to go wrong. I think that we are responsible enough to handle all that goes along with our actions, but how do I know that I am really emotionally ready for sex. If anything were to happen, it would be out of love so I don’t think that I will regret it but it is just such a big decision. We don’t really have a lot of time alone and his parents are out of town for the week, I am thinking that we could have some private time to make our decision before they get back. Does it sound like I am ready or do I need to wait, and how will I know that it is the right time? And also, I have an appointment with my doctor in about two weeks. I am going to get started on birth control to get my cycles regular. It bothers me though will he know if I am a virgin or not? And is there anything to really worry about if we have sex before I go? That will reduce any chances of mistakes. You won't have to worry that your doctor knows (first of all because there is NO way he can tell from an examination). This will also give you a chance to think it over more. You both seem mature enough and with your parents' ok there is no reason for you to hold back. So, even if you go ahead and have intercourse before you see the doctor you are probably doing an ok thing since you have discussed "what ifs" already. Good luck!
