How to make a long distance relationship work

Visitor's Question:
My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 2 years now. He's 19 and I will soon be 18. He will be leaving for college in about a month and I will be here, a senior in high school. He is going to college on the other side of the country so I will only see him at Christmas, maybe Spring Break, and again in the summer. I know a long distance relationship will be hard work but we both really want to keep our relationship going-we've even talked about getting married once we feel we are ready. My question to you is, what would you suggest to make a long distance relationship work? Does it help to have some sort of routine-like call each other every Sunday and twice during the week? Plus, I know college is a time when most people figure out who they are since they are on their own for the first time. I want him to be able to have a great college experience. Should I suggest having an open relationship so he can have this kind of experience and thus doesn't see me as limiting him?

Our Suggestion:
A LDR is a tough thing to maintain.

Your ideas of having a routine are excellent.

But, I fear your idea of an open relationship would spell doom for your own relationship. Most open relationships end up in split ups unless the couples discover soon that the open relationship is not for them.

Keep thinking about your situation. Your thoughts so far show that you are looking honestly and deeply into the situation.

Good luck! George
