Blank Conversations

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
Hi there. My girlfriend and I have been going out for 3 months now and lately we've been discussing a huge problem in our relationship that is giving us the ideas of taking a break. We have the problem of these "blank" conversations. We'll be together talking and then out of nowhere we will just sit there and act like strangers with nothing to say. We dont understand the problem and she thinks a break is good for time to think and then get back together. She's usually short though when it comes to talking. If I have something to say she'll respond with a short answer and the conversation goes nowhere. We don't understand how a couple of 3 months is having this problem. We need to work on this. Thank you for any advice.

Our Suggestion:
Neither of you are big talkers.

It would be nice if you could talk without these breaks in your conversations. Try to be ready with topics when these times arise: family, pets, friends, music, cable, computers, sports, etc.

Here's an odd idea that might work. Bring along a crossword puzzle book and if you have nothing to talk about start working on a puzzle together. Doing that will inevitably bring ups things to talk about.

Good luck! George
