Visitor's Question:
My girlfriend recently broke up with me after 5 years and 2 months. She says that she just needs time and she wants to date other people to find out what she wants. We have also never lived within a 2 hour drive of each other, but have always managed to speak and see each other and make the best of our time together. Neither of us had dated anyone before. This break up came completely out of the blue to me. even though looking back all of the clues were there that we were becoming distant. Over the last 4 or 5 months we have argued more and more. The arguments were always minuscule, and usually my fault for perpetuating them. I love her and miss her so much. We have talked twice on the phone since she broke up with me, and both times she has insisted that this is what she wants, but at other times during the conversation she says that there may be a future for us together. I don’t know what to do. I may cut my university career short so I can move to her area, but I don’t want to scare her away. I am currently trying to not contact her until she calls me so that she has a chance to miss me, but it is excruciatingly difficult, and every day hurts just as much as the previous. I know that if she took me back that I could and would make her the happiest person in the world. I just don’t know how to go about doing that. I have sent her a bouquet of flowers that cost me a fortune, especially since I’m an unemployed student, and got no response from her. Not even an acknowledgement to say that she received the flowers. I have the means to visit her now, but I don’t want to show up uninvited and push her further away. I just want to know what I can do to get her to see that I have changed and that I love her, miss her, and appreciate her more then ever before and take me back. What can I do?

Our Suggestion:
Contact her once a week for fifteen minutes just to say hi and let her know you still care for her. Be cheerful but make sure she knows you are in pain...it can be done.

I don't know what you have to work on. You only mentioned "miniscule" arguments. Surely she wouldn't call for a break due to that. Well is can't hurt to convince her you have changed for the better, whatever it is.

You didn't say, but is sounds like this break only took place a week or two ago. Keep up the hope. That isn't a lot of time. Things can change overnight.

Good luck! George
