He can really affect my mood. How do I let him go?

Visitor's Question:
I have a unique friendship with my male friend. We've know eachother for about three years now and even though we lived in the same State we had only met up three times. One of those meetings we allowed our hormones to get the best of us. Things didn't get weird after that like I thought they were. He now lives in a different State and is so unhappy there, but isn't sure if he's going to come back home when his contract is up. I have always felt a good connection with him and about two months ago he confessed his feelings for me. He said from the first day we met a part of him has always been in love with me. That took me on an emotional ride because I was happy to hear he felt the same about me as I did for him, but at the same time I was upset because he had a girlfriend at the time. He no longer has a girlfriend now, and there is so much to the story, but basically I know that he and I can never be. I don't want to set myself up for a heart break but I am having a hard time separating myself from him. I enjoy our conversations (always online convos) and don't want to give that up but at the same time I feel he don't care about our friendship as much as I do and it causes my mood to be sour with every one else. I just need advice on how to take a few steps back from him without losing our unique friendship. If that's even possible.

Thank you!
J

Our Suggestion:
When you have your online convos, tell him at the beginning of every other one that you will have to cut it short because.... (make up an excuse).

This will give him the hint that something is not exactly going right. Let him wonder for a week or so and see what he says. If you think the time is right, tell him what you told me and see how he reacts.

If he comes on strong you might have to let him just realize that you want to back off because he is affecting your mood.

Goof luck! George
