That's not how it works! The relationship starts hot and heavy and then matures into something more long lasting - that is, best friendship and love. You guys got that, and he decided he wanted to move on to find another hot-and-heavy. And undoubtedly he'll never be happy because he'll keep moving on and on and on chasing it. Which means he'll end up alone in the end. It really sounds like he simply wasn't ready for a real relationship. I know it really hurts to be broken up with, and it can take months to heal.
