You can't just rewire him to fit your needs. The happiest relationships in the world are between two best friends. So if you really wanted to make this work, become his best friend. Spend time with him, do things that you both enjoy, talk about things that you both enjoy talking about. If you two can become best friends, then the rest will happen naturally.
