Since he doesn't have a date yet, then you can go up to him and say, "hey, I heard you don't have a date, and I don't have a date, and I'd rather go with a friend than with some dumb guy. Want to go with me?" This way if he says no, then it's not like you were looking for -him- to go with you, you were just looking for a friend.
