She's Depressed, We Broke Up

Suggest Advice

Do you have some advice for this person?

Visitor's Question:
I still love this girl that broke up with me, she left me because of her depression. She told me that I probably kept her alive. I feel great about that. We grew to love eachother for who we were. And when times were bad one of us was right there to help deal with the problems.

But she doesn’t want me as a lover. I guess I do want her more than a friend. What should I do? Do I give it time and see what will happen with our friendship?

Our Suggestion:
While it's nice to feel that you were important to her, definitely a relationship shouldn't be about one person *needing* the other. Both people should be strong on their own and then share the world with each other. So if she really was that needy, it sounds like a good thing that she took some time off to get back on her own feet, to feel good about herself and get some control in her life.

Be there for her, be a friend, be there to talk to her. When she gets a better grounding under her, she'll be back to share fully in your relationship. But until then, she really needs to learn how to stand on her own.
