Going off to different colleges

Visitor's Question:
My friend and I had been dating since August 2003 until we broke up last month (March 22nd). We've known each other for 15 years,as our parents were friends, and were ourselves best friends before we made a deeper connection and kissed and grew into a really deep relationship. The problem was however I'm a year older and currently go to school (UCSD) and now she will be heading back East for college in the Ivy league. Knowing that this distance would probably cause too much of a strain, we had long discussed how we would end the relationship. Now however I am going to England for Summer School, and the end of high school has taken over for her and now she wants to go out and be a wild high school kid while she still has the chance. She broke up with me, saying she wasn't in love anymore, but we still hung out and did couple type things for the first week. When this got to be too hard for me, we stopped doing that too, and haven't seen each other in three weeks. Now she's seeing another guy, but she tells me she's really just going out and having a good time, and I can understand that. I also know a relationship won't begin between us before she goes to school in August. My question is what's the best way to keep any chance of a relationship there? The two of us really do work well together, I'm just trying to find some way to make sure I don't ruin her heart for me in the long haul. Thanks a lot, this obviously isn't the whole story, but you asked to keep it brief, so I tried.

Our Suggestion:
You are broken up right now. Also, you will be going to distant schools starting next fall. The odds of your relationship lasting are very remote.

My advice is to stay as emotionally close to her as you two find comfortable. Keep communicating electronically and share your feelings and experiences. There is the possibility that after sowing some wild oats she may feel the same loving feelings about you again. Only time will tell.

Good luck,
George
