Is dating a younger man OK?

Visitor's Question:
Well, I think I have two questions about the same situation. I've been working with this girl for abot 7-8 months now, we talk at work and I really like her and I think that she maybe likes me, though that's not what this is about. She's 23 soon to be 24 and I'm 20. It seems to me that most women don't like the idea of dating a younger guy, especially when there's a 3, almost 4 year difference. SO I'm wondering if age is an issue and I'm also wondering if its a good idea to ask someone from work out, I imagine that if she says no or things eventually go bad working together may become a bit difficult.

Our Suggestion:
Many, many women date younger guys. Maybe it was an issue 50 years ago, but it's rarely an issue now. Three or four years isn't a big gap either. There are many people in their 20s who end up marrying people in their 30s, so 3-4 years is practically nothing.

The work issue is the more serious one. Dating someone at work can be VERY tricky, especially if you two end up on projects together or working on related issues. People will start to believe that you're giving each other preferential treatment, or covering for each others mistakes, or all sorts of other things. It turns into a big confusing mess. If you break up it gets even worse.

The best thing to do is to take it slow, and to keep it very quiet at first. That way if you break up, it can also be quiet and not in the public eye. It'll be hard to keep it quiet forever, but hopefully after a few months you two will know if you're serious or not, and if you are still together you can start to make it public slowly.
