Visitor's Question:
My partner of two years recently broke up with me, just after paying off the engagment ring, and a week before we were due to move out of home together. i was totally devastated, after having invested so much in him. We have recently met up and agreed to take it slowly, and try to rekindle the old flames. I am really having trouble being able to trust him not to hurt me again. At the time of the breakup, I was in counselling to overcome my child sexual abuse, my grandfather had just past away, and i was in the middle of 4 final uni exams, and very stressed out and tense. I was so shocked and shattered about the break-up and I am scared of having to go through it all again, as I relied on my partner to help me through the bad times. I am also a final year psychology and the literature on second chances seems to be very bleak and pessimistic. I keep getting advice that time will heal and trust will come back. How long is too long to wait for trust to come back? Is there things I can do to regain the total faith I once had in him, or is it inadvisable to throw myself back into his arms where I once felt so safe?

Our Suggestion:
The advice about time healing is the right one.

You will develop a sense of whether to trust him or not pretty soon if you make a point of having long, deep, caring, and honest discussions with him and hopefully will bring you two together and have a trusting relationship again.

It is good that you are taking it slowly... you are under too much pressure to devote yourself intensely to a relationship.

Best of luck to you! George
